Enhanced stability and failure avoidance of hydropower plant in contingent island operation by model predictive frequency control

The challenges of contingent island operation hydropower plants are addressed by proposing an enhanced frequency control with advanced algorithms. study is based on a real power plant and considers the relevant system in its entirety along load transmission lines. Integrated transfer functions between guide vane opening hydro turbine associated generator were determined in-situ identification. A model predictive controller, fractional order PID controller utilizing integral absolute error time criteria designed developed. performance proposed algorithms identified was tested NI-cRIO 9049 FPGA platform. Improved terms setpoint change achieved MPC FOPID controllers. also features betters disturbance rejection compared to conventional controllers, which tuned according criteria. considered have been simulated different operating scenarios, such as variations active length. approach enhances stability consequently avoids operational failures islanding mode.
